Just like in the US, August is “get ready for school” month. Teachers start gathering supplies and getting their classrooms ready, and prospective students come in to get registered. HOM and Haitian partner MICECC operate 3 primary schools and 1 secondary school providing a quality Christian education for over 1,900 students.  Want to know how you can help? Go to “Get Involved” to read more about our sponsorship program.

Despite the challenges facing Haiti today, our churches are busy! The Christian Church of Terre Noire under the leadership of Pastor Luc Aristhene just completed two months of Marriage and Family Emphasis activities and will launch a Community Outreach program with door-to-door evangelism in August and September. As our Haitians friends say, “Bondye ap travay,” God is working in Haiti!

Where’s Leon? In the last 4 ½ months Leon has visited 23 churches, talked to 21 separate groups, and stayed with 19 different families sharing the news about how God is working in Haiti through HOM.  If you would like Leon to visit you and your church, please contact us at info@haitiom.org.

The design for the new dining hall and expanded kitchen on the Barye Fe campus is in the final phase. The proposed dining hall will seat 350 students in either 2 or 3 lunch periods and will include a raised platform at one end which can be used for various programs. This plan gives us the opportunity for larger group instruction and other interactive learning experiences. Fundraising for this project is expected to begin soon.

What do our volunteers miss most? Maggie Tanner, a volunteer from Raleigh, NC, made several trips to paint alphabet illustrations in the primary school classrooms. Maggie shares that what she liked best was being with the children. She says, “Seeing that the children were so excited about what I was doing.  I had an audience every day and they all wanted to help; I felt like what I was doing made a difference!”  She misses being able to serve in Haiti and hopes for peace soon so she can return.
